What energizes and excites you to do? So many of us walk around without a focus and get stuck in a rut. It’s time to stir things up and find out what gives you purpose!
As we are creatures of habit but sometimes our habits grow stale and stunt our growth as individuals. Many get stuck in the work week grind just trying to survive so we can play on the weekends. We get so consumed by what our jobs and other people want from us that we forget what we want.
“Tomorrow is determined by what you do today, so make today your masterpiece.”
-John Wooden
It’s time to take back our lives starting with TODAY. Today is all we will ever have so why do we keep pushing things off saying someday I’ll finally do these things. Someday doesn’t come for most because they don’t utilize their time TODAY.
What’s the answer?
How can we make TODAY our masterpiece like the successful coach John Wooden explained? In “Today Matters” by John C. Maxwell, he says the answer can be accomplished by these two words: decisions and discipline. Decisions will start you on your path to success and discipline will help you finish.
You may not even know what energizes and excites you anymore. Make time to figure out what motivates you and start doing it TODAY. God gave you specific talents and abilities to be used. When you do what energizes you, odds are you’re using your God-given abilities.
For example, things that might energize you could be: playing a musical instrument, reading a specific genre of books, writing, stock market research, exercising, playing sports, traveling, helping others, cooking, teaching, dancing, acting, etc. Life is too short to not enjoy it so find out what excites you.
“Today Matters” is a great book with instructions on how to help you hone in what you want from life and learn how to reach your goals. Below are the 12 focuses of the book that he encourages readers to write out and see daily.
- Today’s attitude gives me possibilities.
- Today’s values give me direction.
- Today’s family gives me stability.
- Today’s health gives me strength.
- Today’s priorities give me focus.
- Today’s thinking gives me an advantage.
- Today’s commitment gives me tenacity.
- Today’s relationships give me fulfillment.
- Today’s finances give me options.
- Today’s faith gives me peace.
- Today’s growth gives me potential.
- Today’s generosity gives me significance.
John Maxwell urges us in the last chapter to assess ourselves in order from 1-12 to list our strengths and weaknesses from the list above. Have a close friend do the same for you and adjust. Pick 2 strengths and 1 weakness to hone in on your vision for life. Re-evaluate and move onto to the other focuses until all are defined for how you want to live your life.
This book has much more rich content and specifics that I haven’t gone into. Pick up a copy for yourself and get to if you’d like!
I want to encourage you to stop putting off what God has already put in your heart. Stop making excuses and saying that tomorrow or someday you will do it. It’s now or never because tomorrow is never promised. Start by taking back your today!
